If it is as hot in SF as it has been in Berkeley what you are smelling is all that poo residue from the dog and human waste wafting up from the scorching hot sidewalks and streets.
Sounds more like Manhattan in August rather than SF.

Can you imagine taking a 20-minute shower, you get dressed really nice for a lovely evening, and then you walk out into this shitty atmosphere and it's all in your hair and face. And chances are you are not going to take another shower, so you end up going to bed that night in a coating of shit. And you might not wash your clothes immediately either, so there's gonna be shit flecks all over your cardigan the next time you wear it. : /

I walked outside around 4:30 and thought, "Oh no, did one of the cats shit and I stepped in it?" After a thorough inspection, I could not find the shit. I got out of my car around 5:00 and thought, "There's that smell again! I guess it IS me!" Then I asked if someone else smelled that smell and he said, "Yeah, smells like dog shit."

What IS That Smell?
San Francisco public works crews are investigating a foul smell reported in several neighborhoods Friday afternoon
Most of the reports are coming from the Richmond and Sunset districts, but the odor's been reported in the Excelsior, the Marina, North Beach, and the Financial District.
The odor is described as resembling fertilizer, and has been noted outside the KGO studios.
A KGO listener said he detected a similar odor at about the same time Thursday outside of his Montgomery street office.
The fire department received several calls about the odor, and say the odor seemed to dissipate as soon as they could get crews to a given location to investigate.

I was just reading the KCBS chatter and those folks think it's sulfur and signals an earthquake. No, Yellowstone smells like sulfur, this is smelling like dog poo. It doesn't smell like the SF sewer vents either, it just smells like rancid poo. Maybe it's mid summer and the poo is just sitting in the sewers without enough water to wash it away.
Anyway, the smell was everywhere tonight.

I wish more people felt like you do and were *half* as considerate. Some people stink so bad they need to shower *before* they work out to spare the rest of us from gagging on the Precor next to them.

Everything smells like poo all the time now. It is something Ive been trying to avoid, and successfully accomplished it for a long time. I mean really. I got to live poo free for 3.8 years about 5 years post college. It was INCREDIBLE. Then I got married. Ok, there is an extreme red tide going on in Half Moon Bay right now. The smell can't be coming that far but the same conditions may have created some algae growth in the waters surrounding SF. That's my theory and I like it better than an earthquake coming.

From out in the water at Ocean Beach, with onshore winds, the smell was coming from the west. So anecdotally speaking, my theory is that it's some type of algal bloom, which can sometimes cause this type of smell. The water has warmed up considerably in the last few weeks (they're officially calling it an El Nino year now), so my guess is that might have triggered it.

I was kayaking in Clear Lake exactly this time last year and the algae bloom, warm water and low tide made it smell something awful. I had to wash all the clothes I was wearing that day 3 times to get the smell out.
On the manure vs. dog poo controversy;
Manure is from a vegetarian animal that has been well broken down (like compost) over a long period of time.
Dog poo is from a carnivore that has been eating processed commercial foods including meat and it has not been broken down over a long time. Aged dog poo smells different than fresh dog poo but it is unmistakeably dog poo no matter how old it is.
When you drive by a farm you are not necessarily smelling manure, you may be smelling fresh poo. Chicken manure, horse manure and cow manure smell different from each other but none smell like the fresh poo of a carnivorous animal eating Alpo.
If interested we can have a Yelp blind smell test. I have access to all kinds of manure and poo.

you know i was talking to my sister who lives on the east coast about this today. she said that they had that red tide when she was in florida. for a few days before she could smell it, she and her friends had all these weird allergies, itchy eyes and nose. and then they found out that it was the red tide, and those symptoms are normal. she said by the time it stunk, it wasn't that bad, but she was going home then, so maybe it could've gotten worse after they left.

We used to call the stinko trees. I smelled the poo smell that day and it was not the Ginko trees. I have smelled those before. Besides they usually don't get pungent until the fall.
My money is still on some kind of algae bloom since there was a severe red tide going on in Half Moon Bay.
